More Dubai motorists win Dh1,000 for safe driving

Dubai: Another 10 people in Dubai won Dh1,000 each for strictly following traffic rules on Tuesday, day two of the Mobil 1 GoldStar Contest, a road safety reward campaign for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.

The initiative has returned this year with its Responsible Road Users Award. Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority and Sharjah Police have joined forces with Mobil 1, EMA Lubricants Company (ExxonMobil JV) and Ciel Marketing & Events in the campaign.

The initiative is supported by Gulf News and Wheels.

The final 10 winners, out of 30 in total, will be selected in Sharjah on Wednesday, the third and last day of the safety drive.

The first batch of 10 winners were chosen on Monday in Dubai, where authorities had observed their road behaviour before stopping them. The winners don’t know why they are pulled over, with some wondering if they committed a violation. Instead, the winners are informed about the campaign and awarded Dh1,000, a certificate and a sticker for their good standing as a responsible road user.

On Tuesday, UK motorist Christopher Burr, 68, was halted by contest organisers in the parking lot of a supermarket in The Meadows, Dubai, and rewarded as one of the day’s winners. Burr, who has been driving in the UAE since 1998, was confident he had followed all traffic rules.

“I do drive safely, and I always wear a seat belt. I’m well aware of the risks on the road. My 20-year-old kid was killed by a drunk driver in America,” said Burr.

Another winner, Emily Guillaume, a French motorist in Dubai, was on her way to shop at a supermarket on Al Wasl Road when she was stopped in the parking lot.

“I was surprised at being stopped, I thought it must be a random traffic check to see if my papers are in order. I’m happy I won something for a good cause — road safety is a priority for everyone, especially when you have children in the car,” Guillaume, who has no traffic fines, said.
