Farid Belbouab Takes Helm at Gulftainer Amid Strategic Overhaul

Gulftainer, the Sharjah-based global port and logistics operator, has appointed Farid Belbouab as Group Chief Executive Officer, effective 1 June 2025. Belbouab succeeds Peter Richards, who steps down after a 38-year tenure, including nearly two decades as CEO.

Belbouab brings over two decades of international experience in supply chain and logistics, having previously served as CEO of Meratus Group, a prominent maritime and logistics company in Southeast Asia. His career also includes senior leadership roles at CMA CGM, where he was instrumental in driving business growth across Africa and Asia.

In his new role, Belbouab is expected to advance Gulftainer’s transformation agenda by leveraging innovation and technology to enhance operational efficiency and customer experience. He will collaborate closely with the Board, partners, and clients to expand the company’s global footprint and reinforce its position as a forward-thinking, customer-centric logistics provider.

Peter Richards, who joined Gulftainer in 1987, has been pivotal in transforming the company from a local terminal operator into an internationally recognized name in port and logistics services. While retiring from day-to-day management, Richards will continue to support Gulftainer in an advisory capacity and as a member of the Executive Board.

Reflecting on his journey, Richards stated, “Over the years, I have often been asked what makes Gulftainer special. My answer has always been the same—it’s our people, and the pride they take in doing their best for their families and their Gulftainer family.”

Belbouab expressed his enthusiasm about leading Gulftainer as it approaches its 50th anniversary. “It is an honour to take on the role of Group CEO at Gulftainer. I look forward to building on the strong foundation laid by Peter and the team, and to working closely with all our stakeholders to drive future growth and excellence,” he said. He also acknowledged Richards’ contributions, stating, “I am deeply grateful to Peter for his visionary leadership and commitment over the years. His legacy has shaped Gulftainer into the dynamic organisation it is today.”

Gulftainer, established in 1976, operates and manages ports and logistics businesses in various countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Iraq, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and the United States. The company’s operations encompass port investment, development, management, and operations, as well as transport of all cargo types, third-party logistics, freight forwarding, contract logistics, container repairs, and minor ship repairs.
