Riyadh Air launches test flights ahead of certification

Saudi Arabia’s new flagship airline, Riyadh Air, is set to conduct its inaugural non-commercial test flight on Thursday as part of its journey toward securing an Air Operator's Certificate (AOC). The flight, operating between Riyadh and Jeddah, marks a significant step for the airline, which is poised to play a central role in Saudi Arabia’s broader Vision 2030 strategy. This national initiative aims to transform the Kingdom into a global hub for aviation and tourism.

The upcoming flight, scheduled to depart from King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh to King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, is one of several tests the airline must complete before it can start commercial operations. Riyadh Air plans to commence its full operations in 2025, with this test flight being the first of many leading up to the certification.

Founded in 2023 and wholly owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), Riyadh Air is seen as a complement to the country’s long-standing carrier, Saudia. With a focus on connecting over 250 destinations globally by the end of the decade, Riyadh Air is looking to rapidly expand its presence. The airline will primarily serve routes currently unserved by Saudia, concentrating on medium and long-haul flights.

The carrier’s fleet will be comprised largely of Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, with 39 aircraft on order and options for an additional 33. These planes are integral to Riyadh Air's strategy to provide premium services for both passengers and cargo, aiming to compete with regional giants like Emirates and Qatar Airways. As the airline begins its flight certification process, it will also be establishing partnerships with key international players to ensure its success in the global aviation market.

In terms of partnership strategy, Riyadh Air has already secured agreements with major global airlines such as Singapore Airlines, Air China, and Virgin Atlantic. These collaborations, which include interline connectivity and codeshare agreements, are designed to enhance Riyadh Air’s customer offering and expand its global footprint. Furthermore, the airline is exploring opportunities to work with digital technology providers, focusing on innovations that will streamline flight operations and enhance the overall passenger experience.
