Royal Saudi Air Force Expands Fleet with Airbus A330 MRTT Purchase

The Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) has bolstered its aerial refueling and transport capabilities with a new order for four Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft. This marks the third contract between Saudi Arabia and Airbus for the A330 MRTT, solidifying the RSAF's position as one of the world's leading operators of this versatile platform.

The agreement, announced on July 10, 2024, signifies Saudi Arabia's continued confidence in the A330 MRTT's ability to meet the evolving demands of its air force. The first of the four new aircraft is scheduled to enter conversion in early 2026, with all four expected to be operational by 2027.

This purchase transcends the addition of new aircraft; it encompasses a comprehensive logistics support package. Airbus will provide spare parts, training services, and ongoing maintenance support for the new fleet, ensuring optimal performance and mission readiness.

"This new order demonstrates the high level of customer satisfaction with the A330 MRTT, " said Jean-Brice Dumont, Head of Air Power at Airbus Defence and Space. The A330 MRTT's ability to seamlessly integrate air-to-air refueling with cargo transportation makes it a highly sought-after asset for air forces worldwide. Its advanced refueling systems enable the extension of fighter jet range and mission endurance, while its spacious cargo hold accommodates the transport of troops, equipment, and critical supplies.

The A330 MRTT's acquisition aligns with Saudi Arabia's strategic focus on strengthening its aerospace and defense capabilities. The contract also includes a technology transfer component, fostering knowledge sharing and the development of local expertise in maintaining and operating these advanced aircraft. This knowledge transfer will contribute to the growth of a robust domestic aerospace industry in Saudi Arabia.

The expansion of the RSAF's A330 MRTT fleet signifies a significant development for both Saudi Arabia and Airbus. It underscores Saudi Arabia's commitment to a modern and well-equipped air force, while simultaneously solidifying Airbus' position as a leading provider of next-generation aerial refueling and transport solutions.
