UAE Unveils New Rules for Telemarketing Calls

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is set to implement stricter regulations for telemarketing activities, aiming to strike a balance between protecting consumer privacy and fostering a healthy business environment. The Ministry of Economy and the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) jointly announced two new resolutions outlining the controls, procedures, and potential penalties associated with telemarketing practices.

These resolutions come into effect in mid-August 2024 and encompass a range of measures designed to enhance consumer protection. One key aspect involves obtaining prior approval from the relevant authorities before engaging in telemarketing activities. This ensures companies adhere to established guidelines and operate within legal boundaries.

Furthermore, the resolutions establish a designated timeframe for telemarketing calls. Companies can only contact potential customers between 9:00 am and 6:00 pm, effectively curbing unwanted calls outside of these designated business hours. Additionally, the resolutions emphasize respecting consumer preferences. Telemarketers are prohibited from repeatedly contacting individuals who have already expressed a lack of interest in the offered products or services. This prevents persistent and potentially harassing sales tactics.

The new regulations also address the caller identification issue. Telemarketing calls must be made from phone numbers registered under the licensed company's name, promoting transparency and accountability. Companies found to be using unregistered numbers for telemarketing purposes face a hefty fine of up to AED 75, 000 (approximately USD 20, 000).

The UAE government remains committed to fostering a thriving business sector while upholding consumer rights. These new telemarketing regulations represent a significant step towards achieving this objective. By establishing clear guidelines and imposing appropriate penalties for violations, the authorities aim to create a more streamlined and consumer-centric telemarketing environment within the UAE.
